Screen Content Video Coding and Applications
JETCAS Volume 6, Issue 4, December 2016

Dear IEEE JETCAS Readers,

The IEEE Journal on Emerging and Selected Topics in Circuits and Systems (JETCAS) proudly published its December 2016 issue to present recent technical advances in screen content video coding and applications. This issue features 15 papers covering the key areas of (1) screen content coding standards, (2) application-specific screen content-coding, (3) mathematically lossless screen content-coding, (4) machine learning for mode decision and quality assessment, (5) cloud-based mobile streaming, (6) string matching hardware, and (7) screen content segmentation.

These include papers contributed by experts from standards committees that provide a timely introduction to two recently published international standards―HEVC/H.265 Screen Content Coding Extensions by ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group and ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group, and Display Stream Compression by Video Electronics Standards Association―and the ongoing standardization conducted by the ISO/IEC Joint Picture Experts Group towards defining a low-latency lightweight coding system with potential application in screen content coding.

Several other papers are at the forefront of this fast-growing field to address rising challenges, such as lightweight image compression for RGBW displays, machine learning for encoding optimization and quality assessment, user experience optimization for immersive 3D applications, and hardware design for string matching techniques. There is more for the reader to delve into. We hope you enjoy the contents of this special issue.

Best Regards,
